Rachel Mathews, PETA Foundation Deputy Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement (CALE), talks with Emil Guillermo about the AZA's announced ban on bullhooks in the training of elephants.
Bullhooks terrorize elephants, yet there has been a reluctance to ban them outright.
After years of piecemeal bans by states and jurisdictions, the AZA-the Association for Zoos and Aquariums--which sets the standard for zoos in this country, has come out with a ban on bullhooks that will improve the lives of all elephants in captivity.
PETA has been working for years on the ban, and hails this day as a milestone victory for the animals.
