Jim Mason, a co-author with philosopher Peter Singer on "Animal Factories," has come out with a new edition of his 1993 classic, "An Unnatural Order--Roots of Our Destruction of Nature." The book is a history of the evolution of mankind's treatment of animals and how the agrarian culture changed our relationship to animals. Instead of being among the animals, we were in control and had dominion of animals. It led to the enslavement of all those less powerful, and opened the door to applying those supremacist ideas to humans. According to Mason, it's the kind of thought that leads to racism, colonialism, and white supremacy. But it starts with our relationship to animals. Mason talks with Emil Guillermo about how to restore a kinship and a oneness with animals that could reverse the path of mankind in conflict with nature and the world.
