It wasn’t just a change of a brand images on Nabisco’s Barnum’s Animals. It was recognition that the depiction of animals caged on the box was as outdated and just as wrong as seeing racist marketing notions that existed in America’s past featuring pickaninnies. The circus is no more. The animals were no longer in cages. They were free.
And so this image became a relic of the past.
There was agreement that the image needed to be changed.
And that was a big step for society and significant news.
Coming during the worst week of political news in the present administration, the media’s attention to the animal cracker story suggests the world needed good news, the reassurance of something good in life. And a reality check. Yes, Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus was indeed still dead. And no one misses it.
