When laboratories transport monkeys into the U.S. and throughout the country, every movement must be documented by a veterinary inspection. PETA found it's not being done in dozens of cases involving nearly 2,000 monkeys. These illegal shipments represent a public health risk as monkeys can pass such diseases as tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and Herpes B to humans. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA scientist, talks to Emil Guillermo about how PETA is asking the USDA to suspend and fine research facilities for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Dr. Jones-Engel talks about how awareness was raised after a van carrying monkeys crashed in Danville, Pennsylvania in January this year. And she says how this wouldn't be an issue if researchers simply stopped wasteful, useless and cruel experimentation on animals.
